BRASÍLIA 50 ANOS | Alex Shoumatoff Explains the Meaning of the Word »Candango«

The year of celebration in Brasília is winding down and it occurred to me that I’ve focused on the work of Oscar Niemeyer, Lúcio Costa, and the other “official” personages behind the City of the Future. But what about the people who actually turned the vision into reality in an incredible 41 months? This post is my tribute to those who actually constructed the city, the candangos. I’ve tried to learn more about these unsung heroes this year, and the best explanation of how the term came to be is offered by Alex Shoumatoff in his fantastic The Capital of Hope (1980):
