BRASÍLIA 50 ANOS | GRAPHIC ARTS :: »BRASÍLIA PRIMA DICE 50, EL DISEÑO TAMBIEN« ::: BRASÍLIA IS 50! POSTERS

Design studio Brasília Prima organized a poster competition to celebrate its fifth anniversary and the 50th anniversary of the city. These are my choices for “best in show.” For the entire list, see links, below.

The call for submissions poster. Nice, retro feel and colours, plus great outlines of some of Brasília’s top architectural forms.

SViDesign UK

My top choice. I like the simplicity of design, the key graphic statement (a column from the Palácio do Planalto), and the colour.

STUDIO MAKGILL UK

Although from the UK, this design seems Germanic to me (a good thing!).

OFFICIAL CLASSIC Hungary

From Hungary, exploded versions of Niemeyer’s columns from the Alvorada Palace. Interesting play of colour from Brazil’s national flag.

MARTINA WEMBER Germany

Along with Niemeyer’s columns, Lúcio Costa’s master plan for Brasília makes for an interesting poster design.

TIAGO BERNARDES Brazil

I love this sculpture, Os Candangos, by Bruno Giorgi — another symbol of the City of the Future.

SAMANTHA KOCKING USA

A beautifully simple design from America that exploits the fact that Brasília was the first city designed for the Jet Age.

ANDREW BYROM USA

I like how this poster relies on typography to present the message.

e-TYPES Denmark

All type! Intriguing.

DFCL Argentina

A Niemeyer-esque line drawing of the National Congress and Cathedral.

SAWDUST UK

There’s something Bauhaus-y about this work. Then again, it’s reminiscent of the CBC logo or “exploding pizza” (see links).

TOMATO UK

A classic piece of graphic design that will stand the test of time.
