BEING GAY IN BRITAIN, PART I
I always thought that Canada had the upper hand when it came to the promotion of equality between members of society. But two recent British events have changed my mind. First is this “Back to School” campaign from Stonewall which is, as they say in Britain, rather “brilliant.” Simple, bold, direct, and to the point.
The other is the National Portrait Gallery’s “Gay Icons” exhibition (see Being Gay in Britain, Part II).
The “Get Over It!” campaign was developed in collaboration with 150 secondary school students and teachers in conjunction with Stonewall. This pupil-devised slogan will probably teach a few advertising executives how to do things right.
The slogan, devised by 150 school pupils, originally featured on posters, stickers and postcards distributed to 5,000 secondary schools. It has been so well-received by pupils and teachers that the message has gone well beyond the school gates.
